Numan News January 2001

Well where shall we start? There seems to be quite a lot of Numan related stuff going on at the moment, not the least of which is the forthcoming UK tour.
First though, I'll try to get things into some kind of chronological order in case some of you out there are not the proud owners of your own TARDIS...

Gary earns a BMI Award for... Cars!

Gary has recently won an award for Cars being played on American radio stations about 170,000 times in 1999. On his own website, Gary thanks Fear Factory as it was most likely their version that made up the majority of those plays. This can't have been bad for his bank balance anyway. I remember that a few years ago when I was studying for my Music Technology Diploma that the writer of a song got paid a set fee every time it was played, at least in the UK. I believe it varies depending on the radio station, but I recall that the figure at that time (1994) was around £50 per play on Radio One. Hey, here's a thought... He must have earned about £500 from them alone in the last ten years!
Anyway, congratulations to Gary and lets hope for some of the new stuff to get played a lot more both at home and in other countries.
Oh yeah, I love that line on Gary's site about him not really knowing what he's talking about when it comes to selling records!

Another magazine CD track

The January edition of Metal Hammer magazine has a cover CD featuring Rip as one of the tracks as well as a Numan feature inside. There is also a section about Fear Factory.

Gary also has some interviews due to come out soon with Making Music magazine, Record Collector and Boyz which is apparently a gay magazine.

Pure - The Tour edition

A new version of the latest Numan album is due to be released on 5th February 2001, in the UK at least. This will feature five live tracks from a recent concert plus remixes of two tracks from the album, namely "Listen To My Voice" and "A Prayer For The Unborn". It was to have had a live video included as well but this is now sadly not on it. Other added features are a screen saver and a poster.

Now, I'm not one to complain as you know but, the down side of this release is that it comes as a boxed double CD and the second disc is just the Pure album in exactly the same format as before. I know that the live tracks were recorded after the album was originally released but I would personally have preferred it if the new bits were available seperately. Of course, it's great for people who haven't already got the CD at all to have the choice but I suspect that after three years of waiting most Numan fans couldn't wait to get their hands on it and bought it straight away...

John Peel Sessions revisited

Shortly after this release, Gary is due to do an extended live session for the John Peel Show on Radio One. The date for this is February 7th 2001 and he has been asked to do no less than nine songs and to ensure that there's plenty of new stuff which made Gary very happy I'm sure. Of course, by new stuff I expect it to mean tracks from Pure as opposed to new stuff that we haven't heard before but it should definitely be interesting none-the-less. At least it should be a good sign of what is to come on the UK tour a week or so later.

The UK Tour 2001
